Day 9 ~ 20kms Colle Val D'Elsa to Monteriggioni - Sweater Weather

Woke up from the best sleep ever. The bed was comfy and the jackhammer was quiet. Julie warned me in advance that she snores and I thought 'how bad could it be?' The first night I was actually scared for my life. First it was silent and then she would gasp for air like she had been under water for 4 minutes.... then came the jack hammer. It was actually scary. Just as I would fall asleep, I would be woken from the sound of the earth shaking from heavy machinery.  With each night, I become more accustomed to the sounds of the night. Now it's more like a distant thunder from a storm on the horizon. The key is for me to fall asleep first otherwise I'm doomed. Every night I put in ear plugs and on top of that, a cozy band with built in speakers. I listen to spa music, nature sounds and waterfalls... anything to drown out the sound of the construction crew beside me working the night shift. Last night there were no jackhammers,  no gasping for air and no external noise whatsoever. The bed was
made for a queen or two and we both slept sound.
We had our included breakfast that had gluten free options and made to order eggs. This hotel was really perfect in every way.
We walked through the city to the river and when we saw the water for the first time we were shocked. Never before have I seen water so beautiful. It was paradise.
We walked along the river mesmerized. There were a few river crossings with ropes for added support.
Julie impressed me by her courage to face her fears and kick ass. She has proven to be brave and strong and almost as stubborn as me.
She crossed them with ease .. well almost... but I'm not allowed to post that video 🤣
The long riverside trail took us until lunch time and ended with a giant waterfall.
We climbed out of the ravine and landed upon a church. I admitted to feeling really shitty and we stopped to eat an orange. We took off our shoes and sat in the shade until we got cold. It's "sweater weather".
We went into the church and I prayed. I prayed for forgiveness (not even joking) I prayed for our safety and I prayed for the safety of my children. I prayed for healing .... lots and lots of healing. This virus is kicking my ass.
We spent the afternoon walking and talking in the hot sun.
The trail was open and exposed to the hot sun but luckily much easier than the previous days.
The toughest part was the end of day, a steep climb into Monteriggioni.
A small castle town on the top of a big hill. The walking path to enter was very, very steep and the wind was strong and cold. Luckily the town exists of one main square and we found our new home after only a few cold minutes searching. It was a steep climb up a narrow stairwell to a collection of rooms surrounding a shared living area. It has a lovely view but I don't expect to sleep quite as well as last night.
We dropped our gear and went straight back out for wine, charcuterie and eventually a hearty pasta dinner. I now have no voice. Barely a whisper... I know, sounds like a dream haha.
I'm near comatose now and the jack hammer is already in fourth gear. Hopefully I find a way to breathe and sleep tonight.
Tomorrow is Siena
Buona Notte xx
